The first is the Blue city; Chaouen to discover the reason behind its fame and familiarity in tourism field. You will feel the unique weather and the calm atmosphere the time you will walk through the very clean streets of this almost perfect city. The Mauritanian capital, founded in the 3rd century B.C., became an important outpost of the Roman Empire and was graced with many fine buildings. The Archaeological Site of Volubilis ; because of its isolation and the fact that it had not been occupied for nearly a thousand years, it presents an important level of authenticity. It is one of the richest sites of this period in North Africa, not only for its ruins but also for the great wealth of its epigraphic evidence.

The latter is quieter and smaller and it feels rather overshadowed and receives fewer visitors than it should. You will visit it because it has Bab El-Mansour, the grandest of all imperial Moroccan gateways. Moreover, you will explore the king’s immense granaries and stables, Heries-Souani and no miss of the Medina and Jew quarter. Finally arrive at Fes. Fes can seem like it is in a state of perpetual pandemonium; some visitors fall instantly in love and others recoil in horror. Dinner at hotel.

    Day 4 Fes City Tour

Breakfast at hotel. Visit the old part of Fes with its numerous souks is a paradise for craftsmen whose timelessness will charm you. Adobe and brick walls, pillars decorated with zelliges (mosaic tiling) and climbing patios are among the gems of the medina’s refined architecture. During this tour you will stop by Karaouyine Mosque & University. One of Africa’s largest mosques and possibly the oldest university in the world, this complex is the spiritual heart of Fez and Morocco itself. Another stop where you will get to enter the site, is what is considered the finest of Fez’ theological colleges; the Medersa Bou Inania. You will not miss the Tanneries for sure. It’s one of the city’s most iconic sights (and smells), offering a unique window into the pungent, natural process of producing world-class leather using methods that have changed little since medieval times. Other stops during the tour include Nejjarine Fountain and Moulay Idriss grave. Back to hotel at the end of the day. Dinner at hotel.

    1. MPT@

Our group of 6 – two families with teenagers – took the 3 day desert tour out of Marrakech and were dropped off in Meknes (rather than Fes). We had limited contact with the company prior to the tour, and waited nervously at our Riad in Marrakech to see if anyone actually turned up! Right on the agreed time our guide Khalid arrived and took us to the van where our ’specialist driver’, Youssef, was waiting. I can honestly say we had the best 3 days! Khalid was a wonderful guide – well informed and happy to adapt to anything we particularly wanted to see. The accommodation and meals were very good and there were some real surprises – lunch with a Berber family who were genuinely welcoming and fun (with the bonus of a girly henna session), a stop at a local market day (date season!) and a lovely small museum that we would never have found on our own. Youssef was a patient and careful driver with a lovely smile – and we’re sure he knew a lot more English than he was letting on! It felt like a huge leap of faith to send off the deposit via PayPal, and my expectations were low after a horribly ‘touristy’ tour experience at Halong Bay (Vietnam) but this tour was the highlight of our 2 weeks in Morocco. If the company is reading this, please pass on our thanks to Khalid and Youssef!!
