The Archaeological Site of Volubilis ; because of its isolation and the fact that it had not been occupied for nearly a thousand years, it presents an important level of authenticity. It is one of the richest sites of this period in North Africa, not only for its ruins but also for the great wealth of its epigraphic evidence.
The latter is quieter and smaller and it feels rather overshadowed and receives fewer visitors than it should. You will visit it because it has Bab El-Mansour, the grandest of all imperial Moroccan gateways. Moreover, you will explore the king’s immense granaries and stables, Heries-Souani and no miss of the Medina and Jew quarter. Finally arrive at Fes. MPT@ –
Our group of 6 – two families with teenagers – took the 3 day desert tour out of Marrakech and were dropped off in Meknes (rather than Fes). We had limited contact with the company prior to the tour, and waited nervously at our Riad in Marrakech to see if anyone actually turned up! Right on the agreed time our guide Khalid arrived and took us to the van where our ’specialist driver’, Youssef, was waiting. I can honestly say we had the best 3 days! Khalid was a wonderful guide – well informed and happy to adapt to anything we particularly wanted to see. The accommodation and meals were very good and there were some real surprises – lunch with a Berber family who were genuinely welcoming and fun (with the bonus of a girly henna session), a stop at a local market day (date season!) and a lovely small museum that we would never have found on our own. Youssef was a patient and careful driver with a lovely smile – and we’re sure he knew a lot more English than he was letting on! It felt like a huge leap of faith to send off the deposit via PayPal, and my expectations were low after a horribly ‘touristy’ tour experience at Halong Bay (Vietnam) but this tour was the highlight of our 2 weeks in Morocco. If the company is reading this, please pass on our thanks to Khalid and Youssef!!
